The Mutawatir: Jurnal Keilmuan Tafsir Hadith is published twice a year by the Department of Al-Quran and Hadith, Faculty of Ushuluddin and Philosophy, Sunan Ampel State Islamic University (UIN) Surabaya Indonesia. The journal aims at publishing an original academic research on the main topic of the Quran and Hadith studies. The subject covers all related issues on the Quran and Hadith such as the classical inquiry of the Quran, tafsir and Hadith, methodological examination of the classical and contemporary scholars to the Quran and Hadith, contemporary approaches to the Quran and Hadith, the oriental studies of the Quran and Hadith, the living phenomena which is so called as living Quran and Hadith, and all related issues to the interdisciplinary studies of the Quran and Hadith.

Abstract

Ma?mûd Abû Rayyah comes to the study of ?adîth as a controversial scholar. His criticism has made a significant change in modern period in which his critics are directed towards some literatures and early ?adîth scholars (râwî). One of the making polemic in his study is his critical study on the authenticity of ?adîth in Bukhârî’s book, ?ahî? Bukhârî. It is not only Bukhârî whom his critics are pointed out, but also Abû Hurayrah, a person who has narrated so many ?adîth and become the most cited name in ?adîth literatures. This paper would shed light on the epistemological view of Abû Rayyah in ?adîth criticism. It highlights three branches of ?adîth studies: authenticity, reliability and historical analysis. This study suggests that Abû Rayyah put al-sunnah al-hudâ (a living tradition of Mu?ammad which is related to ‘aqîdah and sharî‘ah) as a main tool for validity to determine the authenticity of ?adîth. In this case, every ?adîth which contradicts to this value should be rejected. Further he said that ?adîth codification did not take place in the period prior to al-Zuhrî. The political pressure is one of the reasons why al-Zuhrî and other Muslims are militant to write and collect Mu?ammad traditions of ?adîth.

Abstract

This paper deals with the idea of ‘Alî ‘Abd al-?alîm Ma?mûd, who has seriousely built a firm conviction on the perfection of the Qur’an and the necessity of Moslems to obey it. The only way to solve any problem in this life, according to him, is by returning to the guidance of the Qur’an and the Prophet traditions. ‘Abd al-?alîm Ma?mûd has utilized two models in elaborating the Qur’anic tenets, i.e.: [1] selecting a certain surah to be interpreted; and [2] appointing a certain educational topic and explaining the relevant content of Qur’anic verses. Those models stand on assumption that the Qur’an, as a guidance book, has explained all matters of human life. His belief in an existence of the perfect Qur’anic educational system has prompted him to endeavour to describe prescriptions of the Qur’anic verses, so those became as educational perspectives or viewpoints, either with nuance of clarifying, comparing or perfecting, that contain fully messages of moral, religious preaching, and movement, in order to revive the glory of Islam.

Abstract

This article aims to examine the theoretical framework of Mu?ammad Nâ?ir al-Dîn al-Albânî on ?adîth. It has been known that sometimes al-Albânî explicitly put some ?adîths into unsound classification, whereas some major ?adîth scholars put the ?adîth in valid and authentic condition. Through studying his book entitled Silsilat al-A?âdîth al-?a?î?ah and some other books, this articel finds that although in some cases his conclusion is quite different from other ?adîth scholars, he is still standing on the previous principles to determine the validity of ?adîth such like: chain continuity (itti?âl al-sanad), fair narrators (‘âdil) and having good intellectuality (?âbi?), safe from berration (shudhûdh) and trouble (‘illat), but at some points, he has made his own differentiation in defining those principals. Besides, al-Albânî has also given special attention to the validity of matn (the content of ?adîth), that the matn should not be contrary with the Qur’ân, sunnah ?a?î?ah (the valid tradition), logical reasoning, historical facts, sciences, and the practice of previous piety (salaf al-?âli?).

Abstract

Violence and radicalism in the name of religion which leads to terrorism has emerged as a complicated issue in contemporary Indonesian Islam. The emergence and development of radicalism were actually caused by a lack of understanding of the Qur’an. The verse of the Qur’an has been interpreted textually and partially. This, by far, are happened in Paciran Lamongan in the recent years. Reconstruction of understanding verse of the Qur’an on vulnerable communities that is easily affected by movement of Islamic radicalism has been properly carried out, so that it can give a new atmosphere, and it can be the prevention to face the violence movement. Deradicalization of understanding to the Qur’an is a solution-based action to prevent violence and radicalism in the name of religion.

Abstract

This article aims to explain the influence of sanad ‘alî on the quality of hadis. Sanad is one of the most important elements in determining the authenticity of hadis. Therefore, the scholars were going (ri?lah) to Mecca, Madinah, Egypt, Baghdad, Sham, ?urasân and other regions to listen the hadis directly from the authoritative sources and to obtain higher level of the chain (al-isnâd al-‘âlî). Imâm Ibn Mâjah has collected five hadis thulâthî and these five hadis are narrated from the only one sanad that is Jubârah b. al-Mughallis from Kathîr b. Sulaym from Anas b. Mâlik. By applying historical approach to observe narrators’ background, this article, then, argues that the construction of al-isnâd al-‘âlî can avoid defects probability in the case of al-isnâd al-nâzil (sanad with several narrators). The al-isnâd al-‘âlî encourages the scholars of hadis to confirm hadis by leaving al-isnâd al-nâzil. However, there is no certainty of the authenticity of a hadis, because the defects which appears in al-isnâd al-nâzil, can also occur in al-isnâd al-‘âlî

Abstract

This article aims to discuss the heretic (bid‘ah) issues related to ?adîth naration. It actually has been a topic of discussion among muslim scholars (ulama). Some of them refuse the reliability of those ?adîth narrated by the heretics, but some others maintain to receive their narration. This topic has become a polemical disputatation for the heretics are usually labelled negatively as “ahl al-ahwâ’ wa al-bida‘”, which in turns, brings them into a low level of personal degree. Interestingly, some of the heretics narrators are quoted and narrated by the major ?adîth scholars like al-Bukhârî and Muslim. This article argues that ?adîth scholars have revealed a neutral and objective position in appraising the narration of ?adîth from those accused as heretics.

Abstract

QS. al-Mâ‘ûn was seen as likely incoherent for the structural sura has definitely talking on some topics. This article would analyze QS. al-Mâ‘ûn by using semiotics approach with operational steps: giving analysis on the level (1) syntagmatic, (2) paradigmatic, (3) binary opposition, (4) historical confirmation. In the end, the results show that: first, QS. al-Mâ‘ûn has the cohesiveness of the structure shown by the existing cohesive element. The relationship between the first and the second verses is shown by fâ’ fa?î?ah. The relationship between verses 2 and 3 is shown by waw ‘a?f. The relationship between verse 4 and the previous verse, (QS. al-Mâ‘ûn: 1, 2 and 3) is indicated by fâ’ fa?î?ah; or may be it says that the fourth verse is the answer to the question of the first verse. Then, between verse 4, 5 and 6, is actually a sentence. While the relationship between verse 7 with the previous verse (QS. al-Mâ‘ûn: 4, 5 and 6) is shown by waw ‘a?f. Second, QS. al-Mâ‘ûn speaks about religious liar who is characterized: 1. A person who likes to be harsh on orphans and forbidding to feed the poor, 2. People who are lax in prayer and have no social concern.

Abstract

The Islamic scholars seems to impose the “discriminative” standard over the exegesis sanad (chain of narrators), where they accepts it loosely without restricted requirements as applied in ?adîth sanad. It is basically caused by the character of Qur’an itself as revealed in Arabic language, which is naturally resulting in the domination of reasoning (‘aql) in interpreting and explaining its meanings (rational exegesis). But the problem here is when some rationalists scholars easily refused the authentic ?adîth just because it is in contrary to their reasoning or principles, even though the ?adîth undoubtedly has a significant role in interpreting the Qur’an. This paper attempts to analyze the exegesis thought of Teungku Muhammad Hasbi as appeared in his book of tafsir named “Tafsir An-Nur” through his explanation of the first verses of surah al-Nisâ’; and to know to what extend his thought was influenced by rationalists. By using an analytical method, this research found that the thought of Teungku Muhammad Hasbi was influenced by rationalist scholars in interpreting the Qur’an because of deep relationship established between him and them
